How is a lip augmentation performed?

Lip augmentation usually involves the injection of collagen (either natural or synthetic) or fat.

Synthetic forms of collagen may cause allergic reactions in some people. For that reason, a sensitivity test should be performed prior to the actual procedure. Natural collagen poses no possibility of an allergic reaction. Collagen is injected into the lip with small needles. The body slowly absorbs collagen; therefore, the desired results generally last between one and three months. For this reason, this procedure may be repeated on an as needed basis.

Fat injections use fat that is harvested from another portion of the body and is purified prior to the procedure. Because the fat used is from your own body, there is no possibility of an allergic reaction using this type of injectable. This procedure is also performed using small needles.
