| Lip
Augmentation
Lip augmentation is a procedure that increases the size of the lips to make them
appear fuller and more attractive. Some types of lip augmentation involve the
insertion of natural or synthetic materials. Other surgical techniques bring
tissue from the inside of the lip to the outside. The upper or lower lip may
be treated singly, or both upper and lower lips may be augmented at the same
time. Depending on the type of procedure, the results may either be permanent
or temporary.

Lip
augmentation is an opportunity for men and women of all ages
to have the lips they have always desired.
How
is a lip augmentation performed?
Lip
augmentation usually involves the injection of collagen (either
natural or synthetic) or fat.
Synthetic
forms of collagen may cause allergic reactions in some people.
For that reason, a sensitivity test should be performed prior
to the actual procedure. Natural collagen poses no possibility
of an allergic reaction. Collagen is injected into the lip with
small needles. The body slowly absorbs collagen; therefore, the
desired results generally last between one and three months.
For this reason, this procedure may be repeated on an as needed
basis.
Fat
injections use fat that is harvested from another portion of
the body and is purified prior to the procedure. Because the
fat used is from your own body, there is no possibility of an
allergic reaction using this type of injectable. This procedure
is also performed using small needles. As with collagen injections,
results are temporary. For this reason, this procedure may be
repeated on an as needed basis.
Surgical
techniques consist mainly of excising or lifting areas around
the lips. This may help with shortening the length from the top
lip to the base of the nose giving the illusion of augmentation
by turning out the pink part of the lip.

How
do I prepare for a lip augmentation procedure?
During
your initial consultation, your surgeon will discuss the changes
that you would like to make to your appearance. Since the appearance
of your lips is a matter of personal perception and preference,
you will need to discuss your concerns in detail so your surgeon
can determine the appropriate alternatives.
Prior
to your surgical procedure, the surgeon will perform a complete
health history and physical. Knowledge of your allergies, medications
and previous surgeries should be brought to your surgeon's attention
at this time. Specific instructions to assist you in preparing
for this procedure will be given to you after the health history
and physical is complete. Depending on your individual health
status, the instructions may include guidelines regarding your
diet, alcohol intake, smoking and which medications to take or
avoid. Your experience will be much smoother if you remain compliant
with your surgeon's instructions.

What
are the possible complications after a lip augmentation?
Significant
complications from lip augmentation procedures are rare. Possible
complications may include numbing, scarring, swelling, and stiffness
in the lip. No procedure is without risks; however, the majority
of complications known to be associated with lip augmentation
are minor when the procedure is performed by an experienced board
certified plastic surgeon. It is always important to be informed
about the possible complications before any surgery. Be sure
to discuss any concerns you may have with your surgeon.

What
results can I expect after a lip augmentation?
Immediately
following the surgery, the lips may become swollen. Cold compresses
should be used for 48 hours to alleviate this discomfort. During
this time, talking and chewing should be avoided as much as possible.
Cleansing the treated area and applying an antibiotic ointment
will reduce the likelihood of infection.
The
results of lip augmentation vary according to the procedure used.
Surgical techniques offer a longer lasting appearance, while
the use of injectable materials is shorter lived. Most people
notice full, luscious lips with a plump pout that has been considered
to be a sign of youth and an icon of sensuality.
